Explaining Emergent Minds

By Odette D .Valdez- M.Ed and Dr. Maggie Lopez April 21, 2017

In order to understand what an emergent mind is, one must become aware of what “windows of opportunity” means. These are time- learning window maps, in which the time in development are open and when they begin to close for specific learning domains. The human mental aspects of learning divide into two perspectives, experimental and knowledge based. Emergent by definitions means rising, occurring as a consequence. Therefore, an emergent mind is a mind that forms based on outside triggers, such as experience and acquired knowledge. This expansion occurs during a specific period of time when our mind is open to receive and learn.

If a window of opportunity appears, don't pull down the shade.” ~Tom Peters

Young children are geniuses at learning multiple languages, while adults struggle. This is a perfect example of what “windows of opportunity” means. Research shows that there is a specific time where language development is at its highest level of learning. As a parent and teacher, it is tapping into this moment in time that allows for the emergent mind to develop. Through experiences, such as hands on, and sharing, knowledgeably moment, the mind of the young emerges.
